Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Oncology Certification in Skin Care and Spa Treatments?
Answer:  The Skincare Therapy Institute Oncology Certification is an advance aesthetics and spa training, specializing in professional instruction on Cancer Comfort Care® protocols that can be performed by licensed skin care therapists, aestheticians and spa professionals.  We educate  licensed professionals on how to identify and  effectively address the skin reactions and conditions associated with oncology medical treatments and therapies.  Our course includes some of the following topics:
  • beneficial skin care product ingredients
  • cancer specific skin care and spa protocols
  • hand-foot cancer comfort care
  •  health contraindications as well as environmental spa/salon safety and sanitation
  • oncology client skincare and spa development program
  • oncology skin care business building and expansion
  • and much much more.
2. Will my state recognize my Oncology Certification Training?
Answer:  YES.  Although this is a relatively new concept for the Spa Industry, our course has graduated over 1800 Aestheticians both National and International. They are actively providing skin care and spa treatments to oncology clients.  This is an advance education course that has been approved by a board of Oncologists and given recommendations on what is spa appropriate and what will contraindicate.
3. Do you have Doctor's and Nurses teaching this Course?
Answer:   No.  Our Course has already been approved by a Board of Oncologists  and Medical Professionals at Presbyterian Hospital System Cancer Wellness and Rehabilitation for; Overall Safety, Pertinent Oncology Information, and Correct Cancer Facts and Information. This course is taught by a licensed Aesthetician Educator,  Tina Mclendon with 28 years in the Medical and Holistic Spa Industry and Advance Aesthetics Education.  Ms. Mclendon has worked with physicians who had patients with physical and emotional health issues and challenges as it pertains to their skin health, stress management and positive image. This Course is for Professional Skin Care and Spa Specific for Aestheticians who will be working in a Spa or Medical Spa Environment. Very Important: This course is not for those seeking to work in the area of wound care, skin disease or skin disorder treatments, or any medical procedure  or treatment which is deemed  Dermatological, Medical, Occupational or Physical Therapy, which is NOT in the scope of practice of licensed Aestheticians in the United States.
4.  Do you teach any Oncology Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage?(example: massage the areas where lymphatic nodes been removed etc)
Answer:  NO.  Our course is Aesthetician and Spa Specific .  We only teach what is within the Legal Scope of  Practice of Aestheticians specific to Oncology  according to State Board Rules and Regulations on a National Level.  This allows you to provide skin care protocols under your current license, and insurance that is safe and effective.
There are legal and medical ramifications for providing a new skill or technique without proper insurance coverage and  adequate training.   Oncology Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage manipulates the internal systems of the body which is not in the  legal scope of practice of a Aesthetician .  This type of massage  performed  on an active Cancer  patient is done only by a trained Lymphedema  Specialist Medical Professional under the supervision and/or permission of the attending Physician.  Check out the Lymphedema Awareness Foundation at www.elymphnotes.org for more information.
5. Do I need to re-certify my Oncology Certification?
Answer:   NO.  We do not require you to re-certify.  This is a Foundational course in Oncology Skin Care and Spa Treatments. We suggest you expand your education with enrolling in our Advance Oncology  Master Esthetics program.  As new medications and therapies are introduced we will inform and educate our students and graduates of any side effects as well as contraindications you will need to be aware of.  We also offer Integrative Wellness  Coaching  webinars that will keep you updated and abreast of changes in the Oncology Industry.
6. What kind of employment opportunities avail me with an Oncology Certification?
Answer:    Due to oncology skin care and spa treatments being a relatively new concept in the Spa Industry, there are limited opportunities.  However, Oncologists are now realizing the benefits that we offer as skin care therapists and spa professionals in the healing and comfort process.  Cancer centers, private oncology practices and hospitals are now hiring Aestheticians to provide specialized skin care and spa treatments to their patients. We can also make a difference by expanding oncology skin care and spa services in our current employment and businesses as a wonderful asset to the Cancer community.
7.  What skin care products do you suggest we use in professional treatments or retail to oncology clients for at home regimens?
Answer:   Being mindful of skin care ingredients is very important when providing skin care treatments to oncology clients. Due to their sensitives, skin reactions to cancer medications and therapies some products could contraindicate their skin and overall health.  We have researched various skin care product companies and found the best of the best. Our skin care partners  have a great reputation in the market,  measurable results and independent studies, clinicals and brand recognition  in the Cancer community.
